Lagos govt, stakeholders hold talks on proposed cemetery in Surulere

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday engaged stakeholders in Surulere to discuss plans for a new cemetery along Babs Animashaun Street, aiming to provide a much-needed burial site in the area.

The meeting took place at Eko Club, Surulere, with representatives from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, project proponents Legacy Gardens, and community stakeholders in attendance.

The proposed cemetery is intended to address the dearth of a designated burial site in Surulere, according to Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development.

Olumide noted the need for inclusive consultations, adding that the project aligns with the state’s policy on equitable infrastructure distribution.

Permanent Secretary of the Office of Physical Planning, Engr. Oluwole Sotire, indicated the engagement was intended to promote dialogue and address concerns from previous consultations.

Sotire added that Legacy Gardens revised the project proposal to incorporate feedback related to underground water contamination, safety, and security.

Project Manager Olumide Amure presented the design features, which include street lighting, 24-hour security with CCTV, a drainage system, and a 20-metre setback from neighbouring buildings.

Tpl. Risikat Bello and Tpl. Sulaiman Raheem made a presentation on the factors guiding the Ministry’s review of the proposal. At the same time, stakeholders at the meeting expressed diverse opinions both in support of and against the project.

A follow-up meeting has been scheduled for further discussion.
