Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), yesterday, impounded over 100 private and commercial vehicles operating illegal parking and garages on bridges statewide.
Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Transportation, Sola Giwa, who led the enforcement operations disclosed that the exercise was carried out following the expiration of a seven-day vacation order issued on Monday, October 16, to motorists and commercial bus drivers to vacate all illegal garages on bridges.
Giwa said the enforcement was aimed at totally removing every infraction impeding free flow of traffic on bridges.
He said the 100 contravening vehicles were arrested at Ejalonibu, Obalende, Apongbon Ebute-Ero, and Idumota (Cater) bridges on Lagos Island.
According to him, it was nauseating, seeing those private or commercial bus drivers constitute public nuisance by operating illegal parks and garages on to bridges, thereby causing avoidable gridlock and inconveniencing other motorists and road users.
He said: “The enforcement operations would be a continuous exercise until zero tolerance on activities of these commercial bus drivers operating illegal parking/garages on top bridges is achieved in line with the agenda of the present administration.
“We would continue to ensure free flow of traffic movement by scaling up our enforcement and clampdown operations on these stubborn private/commercial bus drivers.”
He said the activities of these recalcitrant commercial bus drivers were contrary to provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.
Giwa, however, revealed that all these contravened vehicles (private/commercial) would be immediately charged to the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecutions.
