The Lagos State government, through its Safety Commission, has sealed 19 event centres for going against its safety laws and regulations in the interest of the public.

Director-General of the Lagos Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola disclosed this during a recent routine inspection and an on-the-spot assessment of some event centres across the state.

Mojola said the safety assessment exercise is an ongoing effort to achieve the Commission’s mandate of ensuring zero accidents.

According to him, the government wants to see that Lagosians are safe particularly during this Yuletide season, even as the Christmas and New Year beckon.

Mojola declared that before the exercise, the Commission had earlier informed all the owners of event centres spread across Lagos state through their various associations of the need to adopt safety best practices at all events.

They were also informed on how to duly register all events for 250 guests and above via its registration portal, www.lasgsafetyreg.com and also obtain an Event Safety Permit.

He noted that the Commission had no other choice but to take decisive action to enforce compliance with basic safety standards and guarantee safer events by sealing these event centres for nonconformity with already-established safety protocols.

“Some of the event centres sealed include White Stone Event Centre, Lekki Coliseum, Leisure Park, La Madison and Villa Park,” Mojola said.

“Others are De Dove, Majesty, The Podium, Celebrations Gardens, The Summit, Haddasah and Tastee Event Centres among others.”

He said the Commission will continue to conduct routine inspections to make sure that safety standards are upheld by the events and hospitality sectors within Lagos state.

Mojola also enjoined members of the public to escalate and report safety infractions observed at events and public facilities to the Commission.
