Lagos sets up marine response unit to curb boat mishaps


Lagos State government has said that it is committed to safety of residents on waterways through quick emergency response to check casualties from boat mishaps.

Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, who stated this yesterday when the state unveiled its Marine Response Unit, meant specifically to attend to emergencies on waterways, said that Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had mandated the agency to ensure safety of residents on land or water and also ensure that victims of emergency get adequate and response support.

He said four of the 26 jetties in Lagos would serve as operation base for marine response unit.Osanyitolu, who stated that 10 purpose-boats had been procured to respond to emergencies, especially boat mishaps, said that the agency could now carry out rescue and emergency operation in collaboration with other agencies, including the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA).
