Following the flooding in most residential areas in the metropolis, the Lagos State government has charged its citizens to focus on the cleaning of drains and canals across the state, to allow for free flow of water as the raining season gathers momentum.

A statement signed by the Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, implored Lagos residents to come out en-masse during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise holding this Saturday, June 26, to clean and clear the drains in their neighbourhood in the bid to prevent flooding.

In addition, he urged the populace to desist from dumping waste arbitrarily into the drainage channels and canals, as this is one of the major contributory factors to flooding and warned residents who still patronize cart pushers to desist from the illegal act as it is still an offence. Waste, he said, should be disposed through LAWMA/ PSP operators strictly.

He warned that the period of environmental sanitation should not be used for any social engagement or sporting activities, but for serious cleaning and sanitation exercises, adding that anyone caught violating the restriction of movement order will be apprehended and prosecuted according to the State’s Environmental Sanitation Laws.

why would residents have to clear drainage, when those drainage could be designed to be covered to prevent waste and other material from blocking it. Just a look at the size of the drainage shows that it can’t handle any increased amount of water.
