Lalong urges respect, protection for journalists
Governor Simon Bako Lalong of Plateau State has called for respect and protection for journalists as they perform their legitimate duties of reportage.
He stated this in a message on the occasion to mark Journalists Day, as declared by a Resolution of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
In a statement yesterday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Dan Manjang, the governor noted that recognizing the relevance of freedom of expression and free media in building inclusive knowledge, societies and democracies and fostering intercultural dialogue, peace and good governance is needed in the promotion of peaceful and egalitarian society.
He acknowledged the specific risk faced by women journalists in the exercise of their work, and underlining in this context, the importance of taking a gender-sensitive approach when considering measure to address the state of media workers.
He praised the UN for proclaiming November 2nd of every year as the International Day to end Impunity for Crime Against Journalists.
