Over 2,000 pupils from 57 schools gathered at LUFASI Nature Park, Lagos, to celebrate Children’s Day and the International Day for Biodiversity 2025, themed “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.”
The event united students, teachers, parents, and environmental advocates in a vibrant call for climate action, education, and cultural identity.
Dr. Desmond Majekodunmi, Chairman of LUFASI, emphasized the urgency of environmental awareness and policy action.He stressed the importance of climate education among children, noting it’s key to a livable future.
“As the rainy season approaches, we must move beyond talk—every stakeholder must act,” he said. “Ignoring Mother Nature leads to flooding and disaster.”
Representing WIRE-A President Dr. Anita Nana Okuribido, Lady Isioma Fidel-Ewerem announced a strategic partnership with EvaCheck and Smiling Simon Greenbuild Foundation to promote clean energy and eco-innovation.
“Let’s build a future that’s smart, sustainable, and inclusive,” Okuribido said.Solar lamps were distributed to children
symbolizing empowerment and hope donated by Smiling Simon.
Rhoda Omotoye, LUFASI Programmes Assistant, inspired the children:
“You are the heartbeat of this movement. Your everyday choices—picking up trash, saving water, planting a tree—create harmony with nature.”
Chidinma Ifunanyachi, actress, film maker and author of “The Importance of Names,” encouraged children to plant trees, recycle, and embrace their identity.
“My book promotes identity, culture, and confidence—every school should have it,” she said.
Mrs. Grace Obarah, Chairperson of NAPPS Ibeju-Lekki and founder of Mc Bonnie Schools, praised the programme’s impact:
“These activities teach students about nature, animals, and science in fun, enriching ways.”
Mr. Akinola Olusola, Area Sales Manager at Fan Milk Plc, highlighted their CSR gesture:
“We’re proud to partner with LUFASI to provide ice cream, yoghurt, and drinks to over 2,000 children—a gesture we hope to replicate across Nigeria.”
Mrs. Aderonke Jaiyeola, Creative Director of Mimiremi Textiles, led still-life drawing and painting contests, using art to promote environmental consciousness.
LUFASI’s General Manager, Evans Basil, concluded:“Children must learn to nurture nature—not destroy it—for the sake of future generations.
