Makinde vows to build lasting institutions beyond his tenure

Governor Seyi Makinde

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has said his administration will be remembered for establishing enduring institutions that will strengthen governance and continue to serve the state beyond his tenure.

Makinde stated this on Thursday while commissioning the newly constructed office complex of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), adding that it would be difficult for future administrations to dismantle the institutions established under his government.

The governor listed OYRLEA, the Oyo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun; the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA); the Oyo State Project Performance Monitoring Agency; the Oyo State Mobilisation Agency for Socioeconomic Development (OYMASED); and the Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency (OYACA) among the institutions created to strengthen governance and promote long-term prosperity.

He said the agencies were deliberately established to ensure continuity in governance, urging future administrations to sustain them rather than dismantle structures designed to address the state’s needs.

Makinde said, “At the heart of good governance is the rule of law. When people know their rights and security agencies enforce the law without bias, you have order, investors come in, and the economy improves. That is what we have experienced in Oyo State.”

He added that his administration’s legacy would extend beyond infrastructure to include institutions capable of sustaining good governance after the end of his tenure.

The governor also lauded the chairperson of OYRLEA, Justice Aderonke Aderemi (rtd), for her diligence and commitment to upholding the rule of law. He acknowledged that they had disagreed on some issues but said he had no regrets appointing her to lead the authority during its formative years.

In his goodwill message, the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, congratulated OYRLEA on its achievements since its establishment.

Ogundoyin said the passage of the law establishing the authority reflected the Assembly’s commitment to enacting legislation that addresses practical needs, strengthens public order and supports effective governance.

He noted that OYRLEA was responsible for enforcing state laws relating to environmental protection, sanitation, waste control, road traffic management, open rearing and grazing, among other matters.

The Speaker urged the authority to discharge its responsibilities transparently and responsibly, while calling on residents, community leaders, business owners, motorists, traders and other stakeholders to cooperate with it.

Earlier, Aderemi described the commissioning of the office complex and the unveiling of the authority’s maiden magazine as significant milestones in its development.

She said OYRLEA had intensified enforcement of the state’s Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law through monitoring, public enlightenment and collaboration with traditional institutions, local governments, security agencies and other stakeholders.

According to her, these efforts are aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence among farmers, herders and the wider public.

Aderemi commended Makinde for his support and the state House of Assembly for providing the legislative framework for the authority’s establishment.

The event was attended by the Deputy Governor, Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal; former Chief Judge of Oyo State, Justice Badejoko Adeniji; President of the Customary Court of Appeal, Justice Tajudeen Abdulganiyu; Secretary to the State Government, Professor Musibau Babatunde; Chief of Staff, Bashorun Akinwale Akinwole; and Head of Service, Dr Adenike Fashina, among other government officials, traditional rulers, religious leaders and security chiefs.
