Justice Abiola Soladoye of a Lagos Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, yesterday, sentenced a man, Nurudeen Nasiru, to life imprisonment for introducing porn videos to his neighbour’s 13-year-old daughter and assaulting her sexually.

Lagos State government had arraigned Nasiru on a two-count charge bordering on defilement and indecent treatment of a child. He allegedly committed the offences on February 23, 2021, at about 3:45 p.m., on Aminu Street, in the Alapere Ketu area of Lagos.

However, the judge in her ruling held that the convict introduced her to pornographic videos and sexually assaulted the survivor through the anus.
The judge also held that the prosecution proved the case beyond reasonable doubts.

“The defendant was a neighbour who went to the room of the survivor and opened his phone to show her pornographic videos and afterwards forced her to practise what he had shown her on his phone,” the judge said.

The court further held the defendant’s confessional statement, wherein he admitted to having had sexual intercourse with the survivor.Justice Soladoye said that the ingredients of the offence of sexual assault by penetration and indecent treatment of a child were thoroughly satisfied under Section 261 and 135 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State. She, thereafter, convicted him of the two-count charge.

On count one of sexual assault by penetration, the defendant was sentenced to life imprisonment, and on count two of indecent treatment of a child, the defendant was sentenced to seven years imprisonment.

The judge ordered that “the sentencing should run concurrently, and his name be entered in the Sexual Offenders Register maintained by Lagos State government.

Justice Soladoye commended the survivor for her bold step in reporting the case and testifying. The judge also commended the social worker and the victim’s father for their courage during the pendency of the trial.

Recall that during the trial, the prosecuting counsel, Olusola Soneye, called three witnesses: a social worker, the survivor, and her father while the convict testified as a sole witness.
