Gunmen have attacked the people of Ukwa Ngbo in Ohaukwu Local Council of Ebonyi State, on Monday, killing many residents.

A member of the community, who confirmed the attack, said the community suspects the attackers are from neighbouring Agila, Ado Local Council of Benue State.

The source recalled that the community had been embroiled in a protracted boundary dispute with the Agila people.

“The gunmen were many and were shooting sporadically. People ran helter-skelter. In the end, many were reported dead, while some were declared missing. It was discovered that the attackers abducted some of the people. I can’t confirm the figure now,” the source said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Ohaukwu Council, Omekannaya Odah, has confirmed the attack. Odah, in a statement, yesterday, said: “Ohaukwu has received, with concern, report of the security breaches and attack against innocent people of Ojiogu and Okpochiri Ukwagba Ngbo on Monday, June 27, 2022. The Council condemns the incident in the strongest terms and reassures all that no stone will be left unturned to unravel the circumstances that led to the attack. Council has liaised with appropriate security agents to immediately move into the troubled area, while working with the relevant stakeholders to ensure quick return of peace and normalcy to Ukwagba.”

Confirming the incident, Spokesman of the state police command, SP Chris Anyanwu, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abakaliki, yesterday, that the command was aware of the incident.

According to Anyanwu, the incident occurred at Ojiogu and Okpochiri Ukwagba Ngbo communities on Monday and ‘few persons’ have been reported dead.

“Yes, we have some details. It happened yesterday. Two houses and one shop were burnt. The hoodlums also burned two motorcycles and one tricycle.

“The Divisional Police officer (DPO) in the area said there are few dead bodies seen on the ground.

“The police are working round the clock to ensure the restoration of peace in the area,” the police spokesman said.
