Marketers task DPR on indiscriminate citing of gas plants
The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) yesterday tasked the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) on the indiscriminate citing of gas plants without recourse to safety of the environment and the people.
They want compliance of would-be gas plant operators before being licensed.
Besides, it also called for unity among Nigerians saying it was a sure way of overcoming her numerous challenges.
Outgoing President of the association, Basil Ogbuanu, stated this in Benin City, Edo State at the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) and national election.
He said less than 10 million Nigerians out of the about 160 million use gas and urged members of the association to explore the advantages in the industry.
According to him, less than 20 per cent of the population uses this product, which means we need to do something to develop this business.
“There are opportunities in this business, we are more than 160 million in this country and I can tell you not up to 10 million are using gas, where is the remaining 150 million? It is you and I that will reach them by expanding the business and giving them competitive price.
“A lot of people are coming into this business now with the mindset of profit alone, not talking about safety but you will agree with me that injury to one is injury to all, when there is explosion in Enugu, it will affect the entire Nigeria, when it happens in Kano, it will affect everyone, we must step up the advocacy and work closely with DPR, they should go round because a lot of things are going wrong in this industry”.
“We are not totally against it but we are against the indiscriminate positioning of these facilities. If you get to some places when you see the way they display these things, you will weep for this country because it is a time bomb waiting to explode.
“DPR should do something nationwide, it is everywhere. There is what we call the conventional gas plant, we know what we passed through before you licenced us, we know what we put in place to build a gas plant. We want justice and fair play in all of these.
“What we are doing here now, has confirmed that NALPGAM is a national association, that is why we have been going round the entire country and we have also proved that we believe in one Nigeria,” he said.
