President Bola Tinubu’s wife, Oluremi, has said her husband is not driven by greed, but committed to making Nigeria great. During a visit to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and other traditional rulers at the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife, she described the President as a contented leader focused on the country’s progress.

During the visit, which marked the commissioning of the 2.7km Oluremi Tinubu Way and Pavilion at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ife, a project built in her honour by the monarch, she urged Nigerians to support the Tinubu administration’s efforts to elevate the nation, noting that its reforms were already showing positive results.

“We are aware that the subsidy has been removed, but with God’s help, in the next two years, Nigeria will be greater than it is today. With your prayers and support, we will build a nation ready for the future,” she said.

Reflecting on their journey as a couple to Aso Rock, she said, “We give glory to God for our position. My husband and I are not greedy; we thank God for what He has done for us. We cannot disappoint Nigeria; with God’s help, we will reach the Promised Land in no distant time.”

Addressing students at Oduduwa Hall, OAU, before the project commissioning, Mrs Tinubu encouraged them to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to acquire quality education and skills. She emphasised the administration’s focus on education as a priority.

“It is important to note that the administration of Tinubu is focused on education and youth development, ensuring all youths have access to education regardless of financial status. The National Students Loan Scheme was introduced for this purpose, and I urge all youths to take advantage of it,” she added.

She further highlighted efforts by her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), which provided scholarships and laptops to 47 indigent students nationwide through the National Scholarship Programme (NASP). Each student receives N1 million yearly for the duration of their studies.

“As part of the #WeAreEqual campaign under the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), I have also reintroduced the Alternative High School for Girls, providing a second chance for young women who dropped out of school due to early marriage, teenage pregnancy or other barriers, to complete their secondary education and acquire valuable life skills.”

The Ooni praised the First Lady’s contributions to societal development, stating that this was the reason for naming the road and pavilion in her honour.

Also, the First Lady, yesterday, bemoaned poor maintenance culture in Nigerian educational institutions, urging the authorities to adopt sustainable practices to ensure the longevity of infrastructure. She donated N1 billion for the infrastructural development of the institution.

Having graduated from OAU 41 years ago, Mrs Tinubu lamented the deteriorating condition of the institution, emphasising that universities globally maintain their facilities despite being centuries old.

Expressing displeasure at the apparent neglect of some structures at OAU, Mrs Tinubu remarked, “Most institutions around the world, built over 200 years ago, still look good because of a robust maintenance culture, something that is sadly lacking in some Nigerian universities.”

She commended Ooni for his efforts in supporting the university and congratulated him on his 50th birthday celebration. In his address, the Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, assured Mrs Tinubu of the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and infrastructure preservation.

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, represented by his deputy, Kola Adewusi, praised the First Lady for her dedication to education and her philanthropic efforts. The governor noted that his administration remains committed to supporting educational development in the state.
