The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Air Force, Kabiru Usman Alhassan, has mourned the 25 passengers and crew members killed in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) ATR-42 aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State.
The NAF confirmed on Tuesday that all 25 people aboard the aircraft, comprising 20 passengers and five crew members, died when the plane crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ilaje Local Government Area.
The aircraft, with registration number NAF 931, was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when it disappeared from radar at about 9:13 a.m. on Monday, shortly after take-off.
Reacting to the tragedy, Alhassan described the crash as deeply saddening, expressing solidarity with the bereaved families, the NAF and the wider military community.
In a statement, the lawmaker said: “I am deeply saddened and concerned by the unfortunate crash involving a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft in Ondo State.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the passengers, crew members, their families and loved ones at this difficult moment.”
Alhassan commended the NAF, security agencies, emergency responders and other personnel involved in efforts to locate and reach the crash site, particularly given the difficult swampy terrain.
The aircraft reportedly crashed near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, with local fishermen and security personnel assisting in efforts to reach the wreckage.
The lawmaker extended his condolences to the families of the victims, praying for strength and fortitude for them to bear the loss.
He urged Nigerians to continue supporting the bereaved families and the NAF as authorities work to establish the cause of the crash and take measures to prevent a recurrence.
