The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), on Saturday, lauded the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, for his outstanding contributions to sports development in Nigeria.
In a statement signed by NANS National Vice President on Inter-Campus and Gender Affairs, Akinbodunse Sileola Felicia, the student body praised Olopade for his visionary leadership and commitment since assuming office as NSC DG.
According to the statement, Olopade, an indigene of Ogun State, has made the state proud through his expertise in sports and youth development, which was honed during his tenure as Sports Commissioner in Ogun State.
“The successful hosting of the National Sports Festival, Gateway Games 2024, in Ogun State is a testament to his capabilities and dedication to Nigerian sports,” Akinbodunse said.
NANS further acknowledged Olopade’s role in transforming sports administration in Nigeria, noting that his support for NSC Chairman, Mallam Sheu Dikko, has strengthened the Commission and created a conducive environment for sports development nationwide.
“The sterling performance of the nation’s male football team, the Super Eagles, at the recently concluded African Nations Cup (AFCON) in Morocco is a testament to the harmonious working relationship between Dikko and Olopade,” the statement added.
The student association urged Olopade to maintain the momentum and continue promoting excellence in sports, emphasising that his contributions have elevated Nigeria’s sporting profile.
“NANS hails Olopade for his contributions and urges him to continue bringing out the best in Nigerian sports. He should not rest on his oars,” Akinbodunse said.
Since assuming office, Olopade has implemented policies aimed at improving athlete welfare, strengthening partnerships with state governments and sports federations, and fostering youth participation in sports.
His tenure has also emphasised talent development at grassroots levels, with programs designed to nurture young athletes and prepare them for national and international competitions.
With the support of the NSC leadership, Olopade has focused on creating structures that encourage discipline, teamwork, and competitive excellence among athletes across Nigeria.
Olopade’s achievements have reinforced optimism among students, athletes, and sports enthusiasts alike that Nigeria’s sports sector is on a steady path toward excellence and international recognition.
