The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) yesterday issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Ogun State Government to intensify efforts to rescue the kidnapped five students of Gateway Polytechnic, Sapaade and address the growing insecurity affecting students in tertiary institutions across the state.

The association, who commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for engaging the Federal Government to secure additional security support for the rescue of the abducted students, warned that if the students were not released within the three-day ultimatum, it would embark on a statewide protest.

It said that its 72-hour ultimatum, which commenced on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, was not only for the safe return of the five abducted GAPOSA students, but the immediate arrest and prosecution of those behind both the kidnapping and the deadly attack at D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic.

The association also expressed grievances over the killing of Ahmad Sekinat, a female student of D.S Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, during a robbery attack, lamenting that many students living in and off campus now live in continues fear of possible armed robbery attack.

The Secretary of NANS, Comrade Oladimeji Uthman who disclosed this at a press conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) Secretariat, Abeokuta, said that it was high time the government of Dapo Abiodun rose to the challenges of insecurity faced by the students.

He mentioned Tai Solarin Federal University of Education (TASFUED), Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro (FPI), and Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic (AAP), Ijebu-Igbo, as institutions where students living in nearby host communities have reportedly been subjected to recurring security incidents.

Uthman also expressed disappointment over what it said was the failure of security agencies to engage with it, despite its previous attempts to collaborate in tackling the crisis.

He, however, praised the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Riliwan Disu, for deploying an operational police aircraft to strengthen aerial surveillance and intelligence-gathering efforts across Ogun State.

The Secretary urged the Ogun State Government to dispatch an official delegation to condole with the family of the late Ahmed Sekinat, guarantee proper medical attention for the injured student currently undergoing treatment, and expedite the establishment of the Ogun Security Agencies–Student Leaders Relations Forum (OGSASLRF).

He also called on the authorities to deploy the Ogun State Anti-Violent Crime Team to campuses and nearby communities, intensify regular security patrols, and set up permanent security posts in student residential areas identified as high-risk.

Uthman cautioned that if the demands remain unmet, before the expiration of the 72- hours, the association would commence sustained statewide mass protests.

He, therefore, called on Students’ Union Governments, staff unions in tertiary institutions—including ASUU, ASUP, COEASU, and NASU—the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and civil society organisations to join and support the planned peaceful demonstration. It added that the venue and other details of the protest would be announced at a later date.
