The Nigeria Academy of Pharmacy (NAPHARM) has inducted 14 news fellows in recognition of their contributions to the field of pharmaceutical sciences, just as it has called for concerted efforts to boost the exportation of pharmaceuticals.
The induction ceremony held at Prof. J. F. Ade-Ajayi’s Hall at the University of Lagos underscores the country’s commitment to advancing pharmaceutical research and development, while also encouraging a sustainable healthcare system.
The guest speaker, Founder, and Managing Director of JNC International Limited (JNCI), Clare Omatseye, who spoke on the theme: “The Nigeria Economy and the Future of the Pharmaceutical Ecosystem,” at the 9th investiture of new fellows, said that Nigeria and Africa need to have sustainable healthcare systems that can meet the population’s needs.
She called for increased investment in pharmaceutical research and development, as well as the development of a strong pharmaceutical industry.
Omatseye emphasised the importance of thinking big and not limiting Nigeria’s pharmaceutical industry to domestic consumption. She stressed the role pharmacists must play in ensuring drug and health security on the continent.
Also speaking at the event, the President of NAPHARM, Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, admonished pharmacists to be more strategically and intentionally involved in the field of drug discovery and traditional medicine.
Adelusi-Adeluyi said that there is still much work to be done in the field of non-communicable diseases and that pharmacists can play a major role in developing new treatments.
