NAUS president tasks govt on LG autonomous
The leadership of the National Association of University Students (NAUS) has called on the Federal Government to grant autonomy to Local Governments across the country, as a way to enhance their efficiency. The body also urged government to scrap the Joint Allocation Accounts Committee (JAAC) to allow local government councils to receive their allocation directly.
National President of the association, Comrade Jonathan Adekunle, made this demand known last week in a press statement made available to Campusnews at the National Secretariat of NAUS in Ekiti State University (EKSU).
According to Jonathan, local governments can be used as effective tool for the development of the grassroots community because of its closeness to the people. He noted that this makes them more effective than any other levels of government in the country.
Knocking state governments who have turned local governments to mere committee by failing to conduct elections and are in the habit of constituting caretaker committee every six months, he stated that such practices are inimical to democracy, saying it has hindered development of the grassroots.
