NEDC rebuilds collapsed bridges to boost Yobe’s connectivity, livelihoods
The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has commenced rebuilding of two bridges that collapsed along the 54-kilometre Damaturu-Buni/Yadi road in Yobe State.
According to the Commission, some of the roads and bridges were washed off in recent floods that destroyed other facilities.
NEDC’s Managing Director, Mohammed Alkali, represented by the Executive Director of Finance and Administration, Dr. Garba Iliya, disclosed this, yesterday while assessing the levels of work done at Katarko and Buni/Yadi project sites.
Iliya said: “The collapsed bridges are critical in residents’ commuting, and the farmers’ haulage of produce to the markets and assorted grains silos in the state.”
He noted that the completion of the bridges could also boost economic activities and livelihoods in the flood-affected communities.
Additionally, he said the completion of the bridges will link neighbouring states of Borno, Adamawa and Bauchi in the North-East.
Besides the connectivity of Yobe communities, he said: “Our rebuilding of the washed roads and bridges could enhance service delivery, including healthcare services to the people at the grassroots.
On the global standards of construction, he said: “The bridge projects depict state-of-the-art engineering that will be flood-resistant and durable for motorists and commuters.
He said that the bridges align with President Bola Tinubu’s directives to reconstruct all destroyed infrastructures in the region.
“This demonstrates our commitment to deliver resilient roads and bridges,” he said, noting that accelerating the recovery process and development of the affected communities.
