New tax laws take effect Jan 2026 as FIRS becomes NRS

The Executive Chairman of the National Revenue Service (formerly Federal Inland Revenue Service), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has announced that the newly signed tax reform laws will come into effect on January 1, 2026.

Speaking to State House correspondents on Thursday, Adedeji said the timeline allows for a six-month preparatory window to enable proper planning, stakeholder sensitisation, and alignment with the national fiscal calendar.

He explained that implementing major tax changes at the start of a new calendar year is consistent with global best practices and necessary for regulatory and operational adjustments.

Adedeji also highlighted the importance of synchronising the reforms with government budgeting frameworks, noting that the transition period would help ensure a smooth rollout of the new tax policies.
