A United States-based non -governmental organisation, After God Heart Inc., has awarded scholarships worth the sum of N200,000 each to 10 students to cover their school fees for the 2026/2027 academic session in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
The beneficiaries were selected from more than 35 applicants after a screening process. They include students from Yewa Egbado College, Ilaro, Ogun State, and Ajao Estate Senior Grammar School, Lagos.
The scholarships, under the AGH Future Leaders Scholars Award, were presented at an event in Lagos organised in partnership with 365 Consulting.
The Principal Consultant and Coordinator of the award, Grace Onogu, said the initiative targets academically outstanding students from underserved families who cannot afford the cost of their first year in higher institutions.
She said the support would ease the financial burden on the beneficiaries and give them an opportunity to improve their lives and help their families and communities overcome poverty.
Onogu described the challenges facing disadvantaged students in Nigeria as a national emergency with long-term consequences.
“Behind every number is a child with dreams, potential, and the capacity to contribute meaningfully to society if only given the opportunity to learn,” she said.
She added that denying children education because of poverty had consequences for society, the economy and national development.
“A nation cannot rise above the educational level of its most disadvantaged children, and today, millions of brilliant minds risk being permanently left behind,” she said.
The event also featured entrepreneurship training, during which participants were encouraged to develop practical skills, pursue their interests and earn income to support their education and become financially independent.
The President of the Yewa Egbado College Old Students Association (YECOSA), Ilaro, Ogun State, Olaniyi Dasaolu, thanked the organisers for supporting students of his alma mater.
He urged the beneficiaries to remain focused on their studies and work hard, adding that they should support other students when they are in a position to do so.
A teacher at Ajao Estate Senior Grammar School, Taiwo Titilayo, also thanked the donors, saying the scholarship would help the beneficiaries pursue their academic goals.
The organisers said millions of Nigerian children remain out of school because of poverty, cultural practices and inadequate educational infrastructure. They added that financial constraints often force families to compromise the quality of their children’s education or withdraw them from school.
They said the scholarship was intended to help academically outstanding students pursue higher education without being held back by financial difficulties.
