The Etsu Nupe and Chairman of Niger Council of Traditional Rulers, Yahaya Abubakar, has described former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon (rtd), as father of Nigeria’s unity.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), yesterday, in Minna to felicitate with the ex-leader ahead of his 90th birthday tomorrow, the monarch recalled that Gowon was instrumental to the formulation and implementation of many strategic policies and programmes that have cemented the nation’s unity and progress.

The traditional ruler listed some of them to include the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme and unity schools.

The Etsu Nupe also recalled that the octogenarian gallantly fought on the side of Nigeria during the civil war, which “birthed the unity that the country is currently enjoying.”

“I am elated that God, in His infinite mercy, has kept this elder statesman, Gowon, up to this moment.

“His wisdom, patriotism and love for Nigeria are unparalleled.

“Gowon has also remained resolute and committed to the Nigerian Project, and has never wavered,” he said.

The monarch also described the Plateau native as a “wonderful personality, a very distinguished leader, who is renowned for his humility, integrity and honour.

THIS is even as the one-time Nigerian leader has commended the armed forces for their relentless efforts in tackling banditry and insecurity across the federation.

He gave the commendation in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.

He emphasised that every government has a responsibility to ensure the country functions effectively, urging Nigerians to rally behind the military in this unconventional fight against banditry.

Reflecting on his upcoming 90th birthday, Gowon attributed his longevity to God’s grace.

He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Nigeria, and acknowledged the support he had received from citizens throughout his life.

Recalling his early childhood, Gowon shared his deep love for Nigeria and his aspiration to becoming a teacher to give back for the free education he received.

He highlighted the hardworking nature of Nigerians, regardless of tribe, religion or political affiliation, and stressed the importance of national unity.
