Nigeria, APRA mourn Namibia’s founding president, Nujoma

Nigeria has expressed its condolences to the government and people of Namibia over the passing of Dr Sam Nujoma, the founding president of the southern African country.

Nujoma, a revolutionary leader and key figure in Namibia’s liberation struggle from South African rule, died on Saturday aged 95.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, in a statement, described Nujoma as a towering figure in the struggle for Africa’s liberation and unity.

Tuggar extolled Nujoma’s virtues as one who guided the country on the pathway to independence.

Also, the African Public Relations Association (APRA), the continental body of public relations practitioners and communication specialists, has commiserated with the government and people of Namibia on the transition of the country’s first president and founding father.

APRA in a letter by its President, Arik Karani, described Nujoma as a transformative leader with matchless grit, vision and charisma, who spared no efforts in offering direction at Namibia’s most trying times in the journey of nationhood.

APRA noted that by Nujoma’s actions, he shaped the course of Namibia’s history and left and indelible legacy of resilience, vision and uncommon leadership that qualifies his as an exceptional pathfinder, an African patriot and fearless statesman.

“President Nujoma was a touchbearer, who blazed the trail for freedom and inspired generations of Namibians to rise and take charge of their destiny. Therefore, Dr. Nujoma’s contributions to the remaking of Namibia after years of colonial devastation will never be forgotten,” APRA stated.

APRA called on its members from Namibia, members of Nujoma family, as well as the government, people of Namibia and those impacted by Nujoma’s fine leadership to be comforted by the stateman’s great legacies.
