Nigeria, US move to deepen business ties as chamber president visits reps

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen

Nigeria and the United States are set to explore new opportunities for trade, investment, and private-sector cooperation as the President of the US Chamber of Commerce’s US-Africa Business Center, Kendra Gaither, visits the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on Monday.

The engagement is expected to strengthen Nigeria-US economic relations by creating opportunities for Nigerian entrepreneurs to connect with American businesses and investors, while exploring how parliamentary diplomacy can support sustainable commercial partnerships between the two countries.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Nigeria-USA Parliamentary Relations, Okey-Joe Onuakalusi, disclosed this at a meeting of the committee, where he briefed members on preparations for the planned engagement with the American business delegation.

Onuakalusi said Abbas had accepted the committee’s request to host the delegation at 3 p.m. on Monday, adding that arrangements were also being made for committee members to interact with the visitors during a dinner hosted by the US Embassy in Abuja on October 25.

He explained that the planned visit followed contacts established during previous engagements by the committee in the United States, including a visit in May 2025, when members met representatives of the US Chamber of Commerce.

According to him, the committee is working to translate those relationships into practical benefits for Nigeria by developing a framework for sustained engagement with American business interests.

He said the committee had directed its consultants and the Clerk to harness contacts established during previous foreign engagements and develop a business and legislative framework to guide future cooperation.

The lawmaker stressed that the objective was to move beyond diplomatic exchanges and identify practical ways of attracting investment, expanding business opportunities and strengthening commercial relations between Nigeria and the United States.

As part of the programme, the visiting delegation will tour the National Assembly, including the chambers and the National Assembly Library, to familiarise its members with Nigeria’s legislative institution and identify areas of potential collaboration.

Onuakalusi said the committee was determined to ensure that the visit produced concrete outcomes, particularly in attracting investment and creating opportunities for Nigerian businesses.

He urged members to identify Nigerian entrepreneurs who could participate in the engagement, stressing that direct interaction between businesspeople was essential to translating diplomatic contacts into viable investments.

He indicated that closer interaction between Nigerian entrepreneurs and American business representatives could help identify areas of mutual interest and provide a basis for future commercial partnerships.

Gaither leads the US-Africa Business Center of the US Chamber of Commerce, which promotes commercial relations between American businesses and African markets. The centre engages governments and private-sector stakeholders on policies and opportunities affecting trade, investment and business growth across the continent.

The planned meeting provides a platform for Nigerian lawmakers to engage with American business interests on ways to strengthen economic cooperation and create a more direct link between parliamentary relations and private-sector opportunities.

For the House Committee on Nigeria-USA Parliamentary Relations, the immediate task will be to build on existing contacts and establish a framework capable of sustaining engagement beyond the visit.

Whether the discussions translate into actual investments and business partnerships will depend on subsequent engagements and the development of concrete proposals that meet the interests of businesses in both countries.
