Some youth corps members serving in Oshodi-Isolo Local Council in Lagos State, have warned unsuspecting members of the public against human trafficking.
The corps members spoke at Ikeja Junior College, during their Community Development Service (CDS) outreach.
Delivering a lecture on trafficking to the students, Victor Madu, lamented increasing cases of trafficking in Nigeria in the last one year.
He said the menace has hindered the growth of the country, as children are special targets for traffickers.
According to him, most victims fall prey because of ignorance, deceit, and most especially, poor living standard.
“Trafficking in our society doesn’t just happen, it’s premeditated. That’s why victims, especially minors, need to be given proper orientation by various agents of socialisation in our society.
“Individuals, on their part, especially children, need to be conscious of their environment, while also ensuring they obey the warnings of their parents or guardians, “ he added.
Similarly, President of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), CDS group, Olawale Omotosho, has disclosed that the fight against trafficking should be the collective responsibility of all, and not left to the government alone.
He said continuous sensitisation on trafficking by appropriate agencies would help in combating the menace.
Some of the students, in their remarks, thanked the corps members for the enlightenment on child and human trafficking.
Books and other writing materials were later distributed to some students, who answered questions correctly.
