Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, has extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late President-General of the Okuama community, James Achovwuko Oghoroko, who tragically died in military custody. The senator also called on the Nigerian military to release unconditionally or formally charge other community leaders detained in connection with the Okuama crisis.

Oghoroko, a respected leader in the Okuama community, was among those arrested by the Nigerian military in August following unrest in the area. Senator Dafinone expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the circumstances of Oghoroko’s death in custody as distressing and a serious concern for justice and democracy in Nigeria.

In his statement, Dafinone reiterated his appeal for the release of Prof. Arthur Ekpekpo, Chief Belvis Adogbo, Pa Dennis Okugbaye, Pa Anthony Ahwemuria, and Mrs. Rita Akata, who were detained alongside Oghoroko. He stressed that if allegations exist against the detainees, they must be brought before a competent civil court for a fair trial.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of Pa James Achovwuko Oghoroko, President-General of the Okuama community, who died in military custody under distressing circumstances. Pa Oghoroko was a respected leader, dedicated to the progress and unity of Okuama,” the senator stated.

“His demise is a painful loss to his family, the Okuama people, and Delta Central as a whole. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and the entire Okuama community during this difficult time. May God grant them the strength to bear this irreplaceable loss.”

He further condemned the military’s continued detention of the Okuama leaders without trial, calling it a violation of their fundamental human rights and an affront to Nigeria’s democratic principles.

“The military’s current stance—acting as both accuser and judge—sets a dangerous precedent that is incompatible with Nigeria’s democratic ideals. Our democracy rests on the pillars of justice, equity, and due process, and any deviation from these principles erodes public confidence in our institutions,” Dafinone said.

Dafinone also raised concerns about the conditions in which the detained Okuama leaders are being held and the implications for their health and safety.

“The death of Pa Oghoroko in detention calls into question the conditions under which prisoners are held by the Nigerian Army, particularly the continued health of the remaining detainees. The military must prioritize transparency and accountability in handling this matter,” he stated.

Assuring the Okuama community of his support, Dafinone pledged to work with relevant authorities to ensure justice for the detainees and accountability for the circumstances surrounding Oghoroko’s death.

“As the Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, I assure the Okuama people of my unwavering support in their quest for justice. I will continue to work with relevant authorities to ensure that the rights of all citizens are protected and together, we will ensure that the values of justice and democracy prevail,” Dafinone said.
