60 bodies recovered from Niger boat mishap, search continues
No fewer than 60 bodies have been recovered following a devastating boat accident in Niger State, the Guardian reports.
The accident, which involved over 300 people, occurred in the Mokwa Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday night.
The Press Secretary to the Council Chairman of Mokwa LGA, Abubakar Dakani, confirmed the incident.
According to Dakani, the boat was carrying over 300 passengers when it capsized at the notorious Gbajibo River in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State yesterday evening.
Dakani stated that the boat was en route from Mundi to Gbajibo for the Annual Maulud celebration when the tragedy struck.
According to the release, Council Chairman Abdullahi Muregi reported the recovery of approximately 60 bodies, with 150 survivors found.
It also stated that rescue efforts are ongoing in collaboration with the state emergency management agency and local authorities to locate the remaining missing people.
