In a landmark ceremony at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), distinguished philanthropist Sir Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu was honoured for his enduring contributions to Nigerian journalism with the official commissioning of the Sir Kesington Adebutu Media Resource Centre on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.

This prestigious event, held at the NIJ’s premises, drew a prominent gathering of figures from government, academia, and the media, all paying tribute to Adebutu’s legacy.

Among those present was Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) governorship candidate in Ogun State’s 2023 election. Speaking with journalists, Ajadi commended Adebutu’s dedication to enhancing Nigeria’s media landscape and acknowledged the transformative role the newly inaugurated resource centre is set to play in fostering truth, integrity, and professionalism among future journalists. Ajadi also praised Adebutu’s philanthropy for its far-reaching impact on social development, youth empowerment, and national unity.

The NIJ Governing Council Chairman, Olusegun Osoba, a veteran journalist and former governor of Ogun State, delivered a heartfelt address, celebrating Adebutu’s role as a patriotic Nigerian whose influence extends across generations. He highlighted the dual significance of the event, not only as a commemoration but as a testament to Adebutu’s role in reshaping Nigeria’s media education. Osoba further noted Adebutu’s unprecedented donation of ₦23 million to equip the centre, a contribution made without solicitation.

Also in attendance was Lagos State’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, who praised Adebutu’s vision and generosity, while Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, described Adebutu as an invaluable partner in national development through his investments in educational infrastructure.

Adebutu’s son, Oladipupo Adebutu, expressed his gratitude to the NIJ Governing Council for recognising his father’s lifelong dedication to media advancement. NIJ Provost, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye, echoed these sentiments, noting Adebutu’s lasting influence on the institution.

The event showcased several notable figures in media and journalism, including Professor Ralph Afolabi Akinfeleye, alongside the NIJ’s academic team. The establishment of the Sir Kesington Adebutu Media Resource Centre represents a major step forward for the NIJ in empowering and equipping Nigeria’s next generation of journalists, reinforcing Adebutu’s legacy in promoting truth and professionalism in the industry.
