Another fuel tanker falls in Oyo, spills 60,000 litres of petrol

Another petroleum tanker carrying 60,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, fell on Sunday evening at Iroko Town, along the Oyo–Ibadan Expressway, causing panic among residents and motorists.

The incident, which occurred around 5:54 p.m., involved a MACK trailer tanker with registration number GZA 55OXA, which reportedly lost control and veered into a ditch, spilling its highly flammable content.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service Agency, Hon. Moroof Akinwande, said no life was lost, adding that the swift response of firefighters prevented what could have been a catastrophic explosion.

“On getting to the scene, our officers discovered that the tanker had fallen into a ditch and petrol was gushing out profusely. The firemen immediately applied chemical foam compounds to suppress the flammability of the content and prevent it from catching fire from the surroundings,” Akinwande said.

He commended the prompt intervention of the Oyo State Fire Service team, led by Chief Fire Superintendent Olayiwola, for their professionalism and dedication, while urging motorists, especially drivers of fuel-laden vehicles, to observe safety rules and avoid reckless driving.
