The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into a recent incident involving its personnel and civilians along the Nsukka–Igbo Eze South Road in Enugu State.
The incident, which has gone viral, involved motorists and officers at a routine checkpoint.The Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, in a statement yesterday, said the incident occurred during a standard security check.
According to him, while such checks are essential for enhancing security, the Division takes all reports of misconduct by its personnel seriously.
As a result, he said, a thorough investigation has been initiated to determine the facts surrounding the incident, and the findings will be shared with the public.
“It is important to note that appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken in accordance with military regulations if the personnel are found guilty,” Ayeni said.
“Furthermore, the 82 Division wants to reassure the public that it will continue to fulfil its constitutional mandate with professionalism and strict adherence to existing Rules of Engagement and the Code of Conduct.
“Additionally, the Division is committed to transparency and accountability in its operations to promote positive civil-military relations. We appreciate the public’s vigilance and the media’s role in bringing this issue to our attention,” Ayeni added.
