No fewer than five persons have been confirmed dead, while 13 others sustained injuries in a road crash that occurred at Zangzat Roundabout, Langtang, in Langtang North Local Government Council of Plateau State on Sunday.
The accident involved a trailer conveying marketers from Shendam to Jos through Langtang and happened at around 3 a.m. yesterday.
The Executive Chairman of Langtang North Local Government Area, Hon. Pirfa Jingfa Tyem, in a statement made available to reporters and signed by Kum Precious Yakubu, his Chief Press Secretary, said he received with deep concern the report of a fatal road traffic accident that occurred at Zangzat Roundabout, Langtang, involving a trailer vehicle conveying marketers from Shendam to Jos through Langtang.
Preliminary reports indicate that the accident involved a Plateau State–registered vehicle with plate number JJN 383 YZ and was caused by speeding and overloading.
The incident led to the tragic loss of five lives, while about thirteen persons sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The injured victims are currently receiving medical attention at the General Hospital, Langtang.
The statement further added that, “Upon receiving the report, the Executive Chairman immediately directed a team from the Local Government Council to visit the scene of the accident and the hospital to assess the situation, sympathise with the victims, and ascertain their immediate needs.
The Chairman expresses his deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes the injured a speedy and full recovery. He notes that this unfortunate incident highlights the dangers associated with reckless driving and disregard for road safety regulations.
The Langtang North Local Government Council hereby calls on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to sustain and intensify road safety sensitisation and enforcement at markets, motor parks, and major transit routes within the local government area in order to reduce road traffic accidents.
The Council also urged drivers, transporters, marketers, and commuters to strictly adhere to speed limits, avoid overloading, and always prioritise safety.
The Local Government Council remains committed to collaborating with relevant agencies to safeguard lives and promote road safety across the local government area, the statement further read.
