Clinic owner apprehended as Kogi Poly student dies during abortion

A student of Kogi State Polytechnic has reportedly died while attempting to terminate a six-month pregnancy. The Guardian learnt that the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at a private clinic in the Sarkin Noma area of Lokoja, Lokoja Local Council of Kogi State.

Findings revealed that the deceased, said to be 26 years old, had sought the services of the clinic to abort the pregnancy. Although the procedure was successfully carried out, medical personnel were unable to stop the bleeding that followed. “And she bled to death,” a source said.

It was further gathered that a police officer visited the clinic, documented the incident, and evacuated the deceased to the mortuary of the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH), Lokoja.

The owner of the clinic has been arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Lokoja, for investigation. When contacted, the management of Kogi State Polytechnic said they were not aware of the incident. The Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Uredo Omale, said: “The school is not aware because the students are on holidays at the moment.”

However, efforts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Williams Ovye, for confirmation were unsuccessful, as his line was not accessible at the time of filing this report.
