Commission distributes 188 wheelchairs to people with disabilities in Borno

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has distributed crutches, prostheses and wheelchairs to People Living with Disabilities (PLWDs) in Borno State.

The recipients were selected from the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere Council.

According to NEDC, the 188 assistive devices were procured at N94 million.

The Managing Director of the Commission, Mohammed Alkali, distributed the devices and said they would facilitate the recipients’ mobility to public places, including markets, schools, and hospitals.

He added that over 300 beneficiaries were given N50,000 each for their transportation costs to their communities.

The NEDC boss said that out of the 188 devices, 100 are prostheses, 30 are wheelchairs, 30 are crutches, and 28 are walking armpits.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for People with Disabilities (NCPD), James David Lalu, disclosed that there are eight million people with disabilities in the Northeast, comprising six states.

He stressed that the event marked a milestone in the commission’s bid to meet the aspirations of people with disabilities in the country.
