Court grants bail to UNILAG lecturer accused of sexually assaulting student

Magistrate Lateef Owolabi of the Samuel Ilori Court in Ogba, Lagos, has granted bail to a senior lecturer in the Department of Finance, Faculty of Management Sciences, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Dr Samuel Obinna Ojogbo.

Ojogbo was arraigned after being accused of sexually assaulting a 20-year-old female student of the institution.

The victim reported the matter to the police on August 28, 2025, alleging that on August 22, 2025, at about 12:00 p.m., the lecturer invited her into his office and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her. She was later taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

In an affidavit, Theresa Temidayo of the Gender Section, Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, said the case was transferred to the Gender Unit from Bariga Police Station on behalf of the survivor.

affidavit stated that Ojogbo sexually assaulted her inside his office, hence the report. It added: “That I am of the opinion that the suspect be remanded in prison for a case of rape and sexual assault, under Sections 260 and 263(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015, while the case file be duplicated and sent to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.”

While the police prosecutor, Supol Adegoke, prayed the court to remand the lecturer, the defence counsel, A.M. Adetokunbo, faulted him, describing the charge as baseless, claiming it was not supported by police investigation or expert opinion in the affidavit.

After hearing arguments, the magistrate upheld the prayer of the defence counsel and granted the accused bail in the sum of N1.5 million, with two sureties, including one who must be at least an associate professor at UNILAG and another who must be a community leader.

The case was adjourned till November 19, 2025, for continuation.
