
Lagos State Police have charged Abiola Odutayo with reckless and careless driving following a fatal accident that claimed the life of Adetunji Opayele, co-founder of tech startup Bumpa, on March 4, 2025.
The incident occurred at the entrance gate traffic light junction of the 1004 Housing Estate on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, Lagos, and was captured on CCTV footage.
The charge sheet, LA/301/2025, presented before Magistrate M.E. Owumi at Tinubu Magistrate Court, details the allegations against Odutayo.
It states, “That you, Abiola Odutayo ‘F,’ on March 4, 2025, at approximately 10:20 PM, at the entrance gate traffic light junction, 1004 Housing Estate, Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island, Lagos, drove a Ford Edge Jeep (Registration No. LND 418 JR) in a reckless and inconsiderate manner, showing no regard for other road users, thus committing an offence under Section 50(1) of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2018.
“While in control of the Ford Edge Jeep, you drove the vehicle recklessly and carelessly, resulting in the death of one Adetunji Opayele, aged 32, thereby committing an offence under Section 52 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2018.”
CCTV footage from 10:19 PM on the night of the incident shows Odutayo’s Ford Edge Jeep entering the junction, while Opayele, riding a power bike, collided with the vehicle’s driver-side door in the middle of the road. Opayele, 32, died as a result of the crash.
Odutayo pleaded not guilty during the court hearing on March 12, 2025.
The court granted her bail of N1 million with two sureties, adjourning the case to April 16, 2025.
The incident has prompted a significant public response, with over 63,000 Nigerians signing a Change.org petition demanding accountability as of the latest reports.
