President and Founder of the D-Peterson Foundation, Dr Donald Peterson, has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting young people and underserved communities by helping individuals develop skills and purpose capable of driving lasting social and economic progress.
He made the pledge during the Foundation’s outreach programme for vulnerable groups, noting that the organisation was established out of a strong sense of social responsibility and a commitment to sustainable development.
Known for his reserved public style, Dr Peterson has built a reputation focused on outcomes rather than publicity. As Nigeria continues to grapple with challenges such as limited access to education, youth unemployment, women’s economic inclusion and grassroots development, his work has attracted growing attention locally and internationally.
Dr Peterson currently serves as Special Adviser to the Delta State Government on Entrepreneurship Development, where he has prioritised translating policy into practical outcomes. His efforts have centred on building entrepreneurial ecosystems that support innovation, job creation and sustainable economic activity, with a strong emphasis on ensuring government initiatives deliver tangible benefits at the community level.
Through its long-term programmes, the D-Peterson Foundation provides higher education support to between 100 and 200 students annually, offers business grants to women, and delivers vocational, digital and technology-based skills training to young people.
According to data released by the Foundation, its interventions between 2014 and 2025 include higher education support for over 2,000 students; technology training for 300 participants currently enrolled; business grants for more than 900 women; vocational skills training for 1,000 youths; and improvements to learning environments benefiting over 5,000 students across multiple communities.
Addressing the growing number of philanthropic organisations in Nigeria, Dr Peterson said the scale and complexity of the country’s challenges require diverse and complementary responses. While acknowledging the contributions of existing groups, he noted that many communities remain underserved and that new initiatives can introduce additional resources, ideas and partnerships.
Alongside his development work, Dr Peterson has an extensive academic background. He holds two Bachelor of Science degrees in Economics and Business Administration; four Master’s degrees in Business Administration, Financial Economics and Economics from institutions in the United Kingdom and Nigeria; a PhD in Economics from the UK; and a PhD in Finance from Nigeria. He is also currently completing a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). His academic career includes peer-reviewed publications and leadership training across several international institutions.
Beyond development and policy work, Dr Peterson is active in faith-based and community advocacy. Ordained as an Elder of the Perfect Tabernacle Church in Delta State in December 2023, he has supported widows, young people and other vulnerable groups, particularly in Ika land, and remains a strong advocate for education at all levels.
Dr Peterson has received several international honours, including an Excellent Merit Award from the Mayor of Bonn in 2013; innovation and sector-specific awards in Frankfurt and Paris between 2013 and 2014; the Kwame Nkrumah Grow Africa Prize for Excellence in Ghana in 2024; and leadership and non-profit awards in Tanzania in 2025.
