A magistrate court in Kuje, Abuja, has granted bail in the sum of N500,000 to Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, following an incident in which he allegedly assaulted Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya.

Abuwatseya had dragged Ikwechegh before His Worship Abubakar Umar Sai’id of the Chief Magistrates’ Court, Kuje, accusing him of assault and threat to life.

The Guardian reports that Ikwechegh gained notoriety after he was captured on a viral video slapping and verbally assaulting Abuwatseya during a heated exchange. The incident, which took place on October 27 in Abuja’s Maitama district, drew significant outrage on social media.

Abuwatseya filed a petition against Ikwechegh on Monday, October 28.

According to Deji Adeyanju, ESQ, who is watching briefs for the nominal complainant, the case titled IGP v. Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, the lawyer for the prosecution, is Umar, ESQ, while Ody, ESQ, represented as the lawyer for the defense.

“His counsel made an oral application for bail, which was granted by His Worship Abubakar Umar Sai’id with the following conditions: bail set at N500,000, with two sureties in like sum. Sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide utility bills as proof of residence,” Adeyanju said.

Adeyanju noted that the case was adjourned to November 8 for the next hearing.
