Fire guts Ilorin market
The Olusola Saraki Market in the Ilorin West Local Government of Kwara was gutted by fire on Friday night.
The fire caused by a surge in power supply destroyed about seven shops and goods worth millions of naira.
Sources at the market said the fire started around 9:36 pm.
The spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said that out of the 269 shops in the market, seven were completely burnt down in the fire.
He said that the incident was caused by fluctuation, which resulted from a power surge from the power distribution company.
He also said that the quick intervention of the firefighters after receiving a distress call helped to save the remaining 269 shops from being consumed in the inferno.
“The affected shops included meat vendors, clothing material shops, and provision stores,” he said.
He noted that the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, sympathised with the market leadership, affected shop owners, and the entire market community.
