Fire has razed 15 shops in Oyo State, with no casualties recorded.
The Oyo State Fire Services Agency said the incident occurred in the early hours of yesterday, October 19, 2026, after it received a distress call at about 4:34 a.m. from a caller identified as SFS Lawal.
According to the agency, a firefighting team, led by an assistant chief fire superintendent, was immediately deployed to the scene.
On arrival, the firefighters discovered that 15 of the 44 shops in a row had been engulfed by flames, with thick smoke billowing from the affected premises.
The team immediately began firefighting operations and brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to the remaining shops.
The agency said no casualties were recorded during the incident. However, it did not provide details of the extent of damage to the affected shops but attributed the fire outbreak to a suspected electrical surge, with faulty wiring identified as a possible cause.
Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Dr Moroof Akinwande, urged residents to take precautionary measures to prevent fire outbreaks.
He stressed the importance of installing and regularly maintaining functional fire extinguishers in commercial buildings, shops and homes to enable occupants to tackle fires at their early stages.
