The Nsokpo Dynamic Association (NDA), in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Nigerian Navy, has stepped up efforts to curb drug abuse among young people in Imo State through a sensitisation and career development programme for secondary school students.

The programme, held at Presentation Secondary School, Ogbaku, in Mbaitoli Local Council Area of the state, was part of the activities marking the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Addressing the students, President of the Nsokpo Dynamic Association, Mark Onyejiaka, said the initiative was driven by the growing concern over the impact of drug abuse on the future of young Nigerians. He stressed that communities must work with relevant agencies to protect the next generation.

Onyejiaka noted that drug abuse continues to rob many young people of their dreams and opportunities, shattering dreams, tearing families apart, and stealing futures that were meant to shine. He added: “We are here because we believe in the limitless potential of every young person in this hall.”

The event featured presentations by NDLEA officials, who exposed the students to the dangers of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking through real-life case studies and national data, while medical personnel from the Nigerian Navy explained the short and long-term health consequences of drug use on the mind and body.

The organisers also encouraged the students to focus on building a successful career, with Dr Chika Umunnakwe urging them to keep to their ambitions, warning that involvement in drug use or trafficking could permanently destroy opportunities built through years of education and hard work.

Meanwhile, the Principal of Presentation Secondary School, Rev. Fr Joachim Onyeagam, commended the NDA and its partners for bringing the awareness campaign to the school, describing the initiative as timely.
