Gunmen have abducted a senior staff member of  Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, Omoniyi Eleyinmi, who works in the Faculty of Education. He was abducted on Monday evening along with another person who had yet to be identified,

They were on their way back to Eleyinmi’s residence in Supare Akoko, Akoko South West Local Council of the state, when the gunmen attacked. The gunmen stormed his residence before his arrival. Upon his return, he was seized amid sporadic gunshots while alighting from the commercial motorcycle he rode from Akungba.

A member of the institution’s Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), who pleaded anonymity, stated that Eleyinmi’s wife narrowly escaped during the gunshots. She mentioned that Eleyinmi was not home when the gunmen first arrived in a commando style.

The kidnappers were still present when Eleyinmi returned only to be immediately taken away.  A family source mentioned that the kidnappers had not yet contacted the family, causing distress over Eleyinmi’s safety.

The university’s Public Relations Officer(PRO), Victor Akinpelumi, confirmed the incident and stated that the institution was collaborating with the police to secure the victim’s release.

The police have initiated action to locate the kidnapper and rescue Eleyinmi, The Guardian learnt.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the rescue of one victim and assured that efforts were ongoing to locate Eleyinmi.

Ayanlade noted that further details of the operation were confidential due to the situation’s sensitivity, but that updates would be provided as progress is made.

According to him, the victims were on a motorcycle when they were ambushed in Supare and were taken away. “But one victim has been rescued and the police are debriefing him. The necessary resources have been deployed to rescue the remaining victim,” he added.
