Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted several residents of Odo-Eri community in Yagba West Local Council of Kogi State.
The Guardian learnt that the attack occurred at about 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, when many residents had retired for the night. Those abducted include clergymen, their wives and children.
An eyewitness said the attackers entered the community quietly before announcing their presence with sporadic gunfire, creating panic as they moved towards selected targets. “I am not sure of the numbers, but many residents were abducted. The gunmen raided several homes, including residences of the Christ Apostolic Church and the Redeemed Christian Church of God,” the witness said.
Residents said the sound of gunfire threw the community into disarray, forcing many to flee their homes by yesterday morning. Sources added that the attackers escaped with the victims through Abewo Road, linking Okunran and Okoloke communities towards the Kwara State axis.
The senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Sunday Karimi, condemned the attack and urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the victims and apprehend the perpetrators.
“Unknown gunmen reportedly invaded Odo-Eri community and abducted a pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God alongside his wife, children and several other residents. The incident appears to be a desperate act following recent pressure on criminal elements. I am confident it will be short-lived and that those responsible will be apprehended. Our security agencies remain committed and capable,” he said.
Karimi also urged residents to remain calm, vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information to support ongoing operations.
The spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, had yet to respond to the incident as of the time of filing this report.
