Health Writers Association mourns veteran journalist, Ukachunwa

Late veteran journalist, Matthew Ukachunwa

The Health Writers Association of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow over the death of one of its pioneer members, Mr Matthew Ukachunwa, describing his passing as a significant loss to journalism and health reporting in the country.

Ukachunwa, a journalist with New Nigerian Newspapers Limited, reportedly died in the early hours of February 16.

In a statement jointly signed by its President and Secretary, Vivian Ihechu and Temitope Obayendo, the association said the late journalist’s dedication and discipline inspired colleagues, particularly younger reporters.

HEWAN described him as a consummate professional known for his calm disposition, strong work ethic and meticulous approach to assignments.

Ihechu noted that Ukachunwa was renowned for his punctuality and unwavering commitment to professional standards.

The association said his death came shortly after he participated in a capacity-building workshop organised by the Lagos State Health Management Agency for health journalists on February 13, where he received an ‘Early Bird’ award for arriving ahead of other participants.

HEWAN extended condolences to his family, the management of New Nigerian Newspapers Limited and the journalism community, and prayed for strength for his loved ones during the period of mourning.
