Katsina governor involved in road accident, suffers injuries

Katsina State Governor, Dr Dikko Radda, has been involved in a road accident along the Katsina-Daura road, sustaining minor injuries in the process.

The incident occurred on Sunday night when Radda was on his way from Daura to Katsina.

The governor had mostly been on the road to and from Daura, following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London on Sunday, July 13.

Radda had been receiving dignitaries at the late former president’s private residence in Daura, and had often had to move by road to Katsina to receive and escort dignitaries to Daura.

It was learnt that he was retiring for the day when the said accident occurred.

According to a source, a commercial vehicle overloaded with passengers was travelling in the opposite direction when it lost control and rammed into the governor’s vehicle.

Another source said the governor was being ferried along with his Chief of Staff (CoS) and a lawmaker when the incident occurred, and that both the CoS and the lawmaker sustained impact injuries.

The incident would be the second of its kind on the road involving a sitting governor of the state.

In mid-March 2011, former governor of the state, Ibrahim Shehu Shema, was also involved in an accident on the road while on his way to Daura.

His motorcade was rammed into by a commercial vehicle, and the incident led to the death of his Aide-de-camp, Aminu Ibrahim.

Following Sunday night’s accident, Governor Radda was rushed to the hospital where doctors attended to him.

A statement by one of Radda’s spokespersons, Ibrahim Mohammed, said injuries sustained were minor, and that the governor was in good health and stable condition.

The statement reads thus: “Katsina State Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda was involved in a minor road accident this evening along the Daura – Katsina Road, while carrying out his official duties in service to the people of Katsina State.

“We are pleased to confirm that the Governor is in good health and stable condition, with no serious injuries sustained.

“Governor Radda remains in high spirits and expresses his gratitude to Almighty Allah for His protection, as well as Katsina citizens and well-wishers for their prayers and concern.”

Shortly after issuing the statement, Mohammed posted a video of the governor on Facebook and other social media sites, in which the governor confirmed that he was hale and hearty but still undergoing treatment following the accident.

In the video, Radda expressed appreciation to the people of the state and well-wishers for their prayers and concern.

“Dear brothers and sisters of Katsina state and beyond, we are deeply grateful for all your prayers and concern. By the will of Allah, we were tested with a car accident—but Alhamdulillah, we came out safe and unharmed.

“I’m pleased to confirm that I remain in good health and high spirits. Once again, thank you for your heartfelt prayers.”
