Kwara lifts ban on commercial vehicle plying govt house road

The Kwara State Government has reversed its earlier ban on certain vehicles from using Ahmadu Bello Way, allowing shuttle buses, taxis, and ride-hailing vehicles to operate on the road leading to the Government House.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Works and Transport, Engr. Abdulquawiy Olododo, through the ministry’s Press Secretary, Olajide Abolarin, clarified that mini-shuttle buses, taxis, and ride-hailing services are now permitted to use Ahmadu Bello Way, which provides access to important facilities including the Government House, MDAs, and security installations.

“This clarification is necessary for public awareness,” the statement read.

However, Olododo said that tricycles, motorcycles, and heavy-duty trucks are still prohibited from the route due to security concerns and the need to maintain public order.

Last Friday, the state government had imposed restrictions on several categories of vehicles, instructing the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Agency to enforce the ban.

The restricted vehicles included tricycles (Keke Napep), commercial motorcycles (Okada), taxis, trucks, and heavy-duty vehicles. Violators were warned that fines of up to N50,000 would be imposed.

Ahmadu Bello Way, recently rehabilitated, is a vital route for commercial vehicles travelling to areas like Tanke, Fate, and River Basin within the Ilorin metropolis.

The Ministry of Works and Transport has started installing signage along the corridor, from Challenge through Ahmadu Bello Way, to notify the public of the new regulations.
