Lagos govt links food security to economic stability, public health

Trains 500 farmers, fishermen in Ikorodu

Lagos State Government has stressed that food security is not merely an agricultural concern but is intrinsically linked to economic stability, public health, and urban resilience.

The state’s Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, stated this yesterday, during an intensive one-day session that focused on equipping 500 farmers and fishermen with innovative farming and fishing techniques tailored to their specific needs, organised by Lagos State Agricultural Input Supply Authority (LAISA) at the Ikorodu Local Council premises.

Olusanya, who was represented by the Director of Agribusiness, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, Aramide Gansalo, underscored the broader significance of the initiative, reinforcing the government’s commitment to local producers.

Also, the General Manager of LAISA, Olufolake Oluyemi, described the event as more than just training, emphasising its role as a direct engagement platform.

Oluyemi, who spoke on the theme, “Harvesting Success: Innovative Solutions for Lagos Farmers,” said:

“We recognise that the challenges faced by farmers in Ikorodu are unique compared to those in Badagry or Epe. Therefore, the era of LAISA assuming it knows your needs is over. This forum is designed as both a capacity-building session and a platform for us to listen, learn, and co-create innovative solutions.”

Meanwhile, Chairman of the All Nigerian Farmers Association, Lagos State chapter, Femi Oke, commended LAISA and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems for consistently prioritising the welfare of farmers and fishermen.

He, therefore, urged all participants to maximise and optimise the practical lessons learned during the forum.
