Lagos police arrest 114 for defilement, 24 for sexual assault in 2025

THE Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command arrested 114 persons for defilement and 24 others for sexual assault by penetration between January 1, 2025 and December 1, 2025.

Records obtained by The Guardian showed that the unit handled 18 cases during the period, all of which were charged to court. The Gender Unit is headed by the Officer Commanding, ACP Oluwatoyin Kazeem.

The data also revealed that one person was arrested in connection with trafficking, three for child abuse and two for child stealing. In addition, 14 domestic violence cases were recorded, while 10 persons were arrested for rape.

Further breakdown indicated that two suspects were arrested for threat to life, one child was declared missing, and three persons were apprehended for failure to provide necessary care. A total of 17 suspects were arrested for assault, three for indecent treatment of children and one for inflicting grievous harm, while two access denial cases were also recorded.

Speaking on the figures, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Abimbola Adebisi, said the Lagos State police remain committed to ending all forms of gender-based violence and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice.

“The Gender Unit is a specialised unit where investigations are conducted by trained personnel, in line with standard operating procedures appropriate to the nature of each case.”

The unit remains committed to ensuring that survivors get justice for crimes perpetrated against them.

“We will lead with professionalism anchored in international best practice; our officers serve with discipline guided by law, ethics and respect for human dignity; and we will stand, credibly and consistently, on the side of peace,” she said.
