LightOut takes climate change campaign to schools

LightOut High School Initiative has held a Climate Action and Recycling campaign concert for students of Ireti Senior Grammar School and Falomo High School, Ikoyi. Through the concert, students got sensitised on climate change and recycling.

The event was by Lightout Highschool Initiative and the German Consulate, Lagos, with support from the Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Climate Change & Circular Economy, Mrs. Titi Oshodi.

Founder, Lightout Highschool Initiative, Akinade Ibuoye a.k.a Gaise baba, said the event was put together to promote good values among students. “As a musician, who is conscious of my environment, community and in trying to be responsible, we try to sensitise young people to make the right decisions and choices. We started this in 2017. We have gone to Federal Government owned and private schools and we felt need to visit Lagos State owned schools too. We started in Kings College and we have done 21 editions of visits to schools and this is the 22nd edition and it is first time we are having partnership with an international organisation.

“We promote values like delayed gratification, abstinence to reduce unwanted pregnancy, and climate action. This edition is built around climate action and recycling.”

Also, Programme Officer, German Consulate, Lagos, Udochukwu Okeahialam, said the consulate sponsored the programme because it takes issues of climate change very seriously as it impacts lives.

“The Climate Action and Recycling Campaign Project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)-specifically, SDG 3 on good health and well-being, SDG 4 on quality education, and SDG 12 on responsible consumption and production. These goals remind us that sustainability is not a one-dimensional issue. Protecting our environment, improving our health, and promoting education are deeply interconnected challenges that require innovative, inclusive, and lasting solutions.

“Sustainability starts with awareness and education, and I cannot overstate how proud we are of the students at Ireti Senior Grammar School who have embraced this project. Your efforts-whether it is separating waste, promoting recycling within your school, or raising awareness in your communities-are contributing to a broader movement towards responsible consumption and environmental care.”
