The immediate past Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and chieftain of the Labour Party, George Moghalu, has warned against allowing Anambra State to slide into a theatre of terrorism and extreme violence.

Moghalu’s position was in response to the murder of over 11 able-bodied young men at Nibo, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Saturday by gunmen during the community’s annual Onwa Asaa festival.

Reacting to the incident in a statement to commiserate with the victims, Moghalu, who is angling for the governorship of Anambra State on the platform of the opposition Labour Party (LP), said, “I am deeply disturbed by the murder of these young men by gunmen who seem to be on the loose and bent on creating chaos and disorder in our dear state, Anambra.

“This heinous act of violence, where innocent lives are being brutally snatched away, and communities thrown into chaos, is a direct affront to the values of peace and unity that we hold dear.

“This persistent attack on innocent people in our various communities is a matter of grave concern because security is one of the cardinal objectives of any serious government.”

Reacting to the state government’s inability and lacklustre posture in tackling insecurity, the former NIWA boss said: “It is very important to call on the state government under the leadership of Prof. Charles Soludo to wake up to their responsibility and to make sure that the state does not slide into a theater of terrorism and extreme violence.”

While extending his condolences to the families of the deceased young men, Chief Dr. George Moghalu prayed for the repose of their souls.
