Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has granted clemency to 117 convicts in a move aimed at promoting justice and rehabilitation.

Among those benefiting from the governor’s mercy, 19 will be released outright, while others on death row will have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment. Several inmates will also see their sentences reduced.

The decision, made following recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, was announced by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo.

The governor signed the release orders on September 27, 2024, with the changes taking effect on October 1, 2024, to coincide with Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day celebrations.

Dr. Ajulo said that the governor’s action is in line with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

He stated, “The Advisory Council meticulously assessed each application, ensuring recommendations adhered to established guidelines, considering the nature of offences, incarceration duration, age, health, and behaviour of the inmates.”

This clemency underscores Governor Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to decongesting correctional facilities in Ondo State and advancing Justice Sector Reforms.

“The approval for these releases reaffirms the belief in the potential for change and redemption within every individual,” Ajulo added.
