The Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has endorsed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for a second term in office, citing his administration’s “unprecedented commitment” to the welfare of workers and pensioners across the state.
The endorsement was formally announced by the NLC State Chairman, Comrade Kabiru Inuwa, during the 2025 International Workers’ Day celebrations held at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.
In his address, Comrade Inuwa commended Governor Yusuf for being the first state leader in Nigeria to implement the new N71,000 minimum wage, describing the decision as both bold and historic amid the rising cost of living.
“Governor Yusuf has proven beyond doubt that he stands with the working class. His decision to implement the new wage is a clear demonstration of empathy and leadership,” Inuwa said.
The union also praised the governor for the consistent and timely payment of salaries and pensions, as well as his administration’s effort in clearing N16 billion worth of unpaid retirement benefits inherited from the previous government.
The recent increase in the minimum monthly pension from N5,000 to N20,000 was also described as a significant step towards restoring dignity to senior citizens in the state.
Further highlighting labour-focused reforms, the NLC acknowledged the recruitment of teachers, the approval of staff promotions, and the administration’s continued investment in the training and retraining of public servants.
“These achievements are not just promises fulfilled, but a reflection of the governor’s genuine concern for the labour force. Governor Yusuf has earned the trust and support of workers across the state,” the NLC chairman said.
